Step by step

  1. Add the flour, caster sugar, baking powder, baking soda, butter, buttermilk and oil to the bowl of a Stand Mixer fitted with the Paddle Attachment. Mix on speed 4 until smooth.

  2. Add the egg yolks, eggs and vanilla extract to the flour mixture and mix on speed 4 until a thick batter forms.

  3. Cut the pound cake into thick slices and use a cookie cutter to take out heart shaped pieces of cake.

  4. Divide half of the cake batter over 12 cupcake liners. Press the heart shaped cakes in the uncooked cupcake batter and spoon the remaining batter over. Bake for 20 minutes in a 175°C preheated oven. Let cool on a wire rack.

  5. To make a simple chocolate pound cake. Combine 250 g soft butter, 250 g caster sugar, 250 g all purpose flour, 4 eggs, 8 g baking powder and 40 g cocoa powder until a smooth batter forms. Pour in a greased cake tin and bake 1 hour in a 160°C preheated oven until a skewer comes out clean.
